Circus Brussels Padel Open: The Mobile Application

Within our tech ecosystem, Collaboration Betters The World, we believe in upholding sports values. With the aim to take this major Belgium sport event to the next level in terms of technology, CBTW developed a technological partnership with the Circus Brussels Padel Open & Sportero. In order to achieve this, CBTW leveraged the expertise of Positive Thinking Company to develop the Brussels Padel Open mobile application and made it the first official Padel tournament mobile application in the world.

Context and Challenges

With a truly successful first edition in 2022, the Brussels Padel Open became easily one of the most beautiful and followed indoor tournaments of the World Padel Tour. Not only the love story between the Belgians & Padel was real, with 50000 attendees in total, but the historic place defined to host the tournament, the Gare Maritime at Tour & Taxis, helped it to be considered by the WPT players and coaches as the best & most beautiful indoor tournament in the world.

The ambition of the tournament organizer, Sportero, for this second edition, was to take the fan experience to another level with an Android & iOS Mobile Application. Therefore, there were key points that we needed to focus on:

Give easy access to the latest news & insights about the tournament (complementary to the website)
Allow the users to follow the match scores in real time
Creating a second point of sale for tickets
User experience with a fast and reactive application

Our Approach

As with any tournament, there are potential issues that can arise during the Circus Brussels Padel Open. This includes scheduling conflicts, inaccurate score updates, and a lack of information about ongoing matches. To overcome these challenges, Positive Thinking Company and Sportero worked together to develop a robust tournament mobile app that could handle any potential issues.

Therefore, to develop this application, we broke the project down into several key steps:

Definition of the project’s needs: weekly workshops, BACKLOG redaction, wireframes via Figma, mock-ups, and PoC.
Scoping: definition of the functional specifications and support to the WPT as the project progresses (access to match tracking, presentation of players, access to statistics during matches, gamification, news and general information, etc.).
Establishing a complete, secured and stable connection to the API of the World Padel Tour to access the players’ information (name, rank, nationality, age, etc) and to the tournament matches’ live & final results.
Use of collaborative tools (Confluence): product documentation and project tracking, communication & validation with the Sportero team.
Development: based on an agile methodology, delivery of features and integration of statistics and complex design data from the World Padel Tour organization.
Connection with Prismic CMS so Sportero employees can manage the content themselves.
Testing and feedback: under actual conditions based on data from other ongoing tournaments in different cities and countries.

The main advantage of this project is that it was the same team that handled the Rolex Paris Master Mobile Application development. Therefore, the project team had the expertise and the experience to develop something well-built and fluid. They were able to use the same app structure and adapt it to the Padel, which led to time-saving and efficiency gains.

The Brussels Padel Open 2023 is one of the official stages of the World Padel Tour, the only world championship recognized by the International Padel Federation. The top 100 padel players in the world, men and women, as well as the best Belgian players who can qualify in the qualification phase, will participate.
