Digital Payment Innovations: Cashless Payment, Gamification, and Loyalty Program – All in one app!

This case study details how we developed a cashless payment app for one of the world’s largest digital payment providers to provide their users with both non-cash payment methods and seamless entertainment experiences all in one app.

Context

Fueled by the global pandemic, many banks have been rapidly moving toward supporting cashless systems since mid-2020. This trend away from cash in favour of mobile banking apps, digital cards, and other digital payment methods shows no signs of slowing down.  According to a McKinsey’s report, non-cash retail payments grew at a compounded annual rate of 13% between 2018 and 2021. In emerging markets, this figure is even higher, at 25%. With cashless transactions providing numerous benefits to consumers, vendors, and banks alike, this shift toward efficient digital payments and platforms will continue to grow. 

As one of the world’s leading digital payment providers, our client shares this vision of an efficient, digitized, and cashless world; and aims to provide their customers with a best-in-class cashless payment experience as well as to offer fun gamification with their mobile payment app, specifically during the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. 

To meet their needs, we developed a cashless payment app to be used throughout the duration of the event. The completed project included an intuitive and flexible loyalty reward system that allowed users to track their purchases and compete with other attendees in event-wide games and real-time leaderboards. 

From the implementation of gamified reward systems to the complex security requirements of digital banking, this project presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities for our APAC expert engineering team. 

Our Approach

Our project team was based in Vietnam and made up of 30 senior Mobile and Node.js developers who worked closely with our client throughout the exploration, planning, development and production phases. Our primary objective was to create an all-in-one payment app, which would allow users to register their credit and debit cards, conduct transactions with vendors at the event site, and participate in in-app games throughout the duration of the sports event. 

We designed and integrated a flexible loyalty system into the app to incentivize end-user engagement. Additionally, we provided app users with the opportunity to play HTML5 mini-games right after completing transactions. Users could also compete with other attendees of the event on an event-wide leaderboard.

With a clear roadmap laid down by our client and consultancy from our APAC team, the project started off strong, and we successfully delivered important features on time. These included: 

During the lifetime of the project, our engineering team took on many new challenges with the card verification processes to meet PCI/PCII Bank-grade security requirements. In addition, the integration of Google and Apple wallets also required several technical challenges. However, our expert team worked diligently and was able to overcome each challenge, as well as create a real-time notification system calculating engagement and showing transaction history. 

Deploying this cashless payment app, integrated with gamification and a loyalty program, was truly satisfying for our APAC team. We collaborated with the client’s team and added value in development, business requirements, testing, and project management. With the successful deployment of the project, our client was able to showcase their Digital Engagement Engine (DEE) capability, a completely new way for partner banks to connect with their customers through transactions, gamification, rewards, and incentives.
